5 Signs Your ATV or UTV Clutch Needs Replacing

CVT clutches are wear items. Catching the symptoms early saves you from being stranded on the trail — and from collateral damage to your belt and drivetrain. Here are the five warning signs we see most often.

1. Slipping or Delayed Engagement

You give it throttle and the engine revs, but the machine hesitates before moving — like a slipping clutch in a manual car. Worn weights, a weak spring, or glazed sheaves in the primary clutch are the usual suspects. Left alone, it only gets worse, and the extra belt slip generates heat that eats belts.

2. Loss of Top Speed or Power

If your machine used to hit 55 mph and now struggles past 45, the clutches may no longer be shifting through their full range. A worn secondary (helix or bushings) or weak primary spring keeps the CVT stuck in a "lower gear."

3. Rattling, Clunking, or Squealing at Idle

Unusual noises from the clutch cover deserve immediate attention. Rattling at idle often means worn weight pins or bushings in the primary. Squealing on take-off points to belt slip from poor clamping force. A metallic clunk when engaging can indicate a cracked or loose component — stop riding until it is inspected.

4. Burning Smell or Repeated Belt Failures

Belts rarely die of old age — they are usually killed by a clutch problem. If you are replacing belts more than once a season, the root cause is almost always in the clutches: misalignment, worn sheaves, or weak clamping force. Replacing the belt without fixing the clutch just feeds the problem.

5. Visible Wear When You Inspect

Pull the clutch cover and look: deep grooves or a "washboard" surface on the sheaves, bluing from heat, loose or notchy movement in the movable sheave, cracked weights, or excessive play in the shaft. Any of these means the clutch is living on borrowed time.

Repair or Replace?

Individual components (weights, springs, bushings) can sometimes be serviced, but for most owners a complete replacement assembly is the faster, more reliable fix — everything inside is new, balanced, and calibrated to OE specification. Match the OEM part number stamped on your old unit to our fitment tables, and installation is a direct bolt-on with no modifications.

Every KINON replacement clutch is engineered to OE specifications and backed by a 12-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects (see our Warranty Policy), with worldwide shipping from our factory warehouse.
